About HRECOS
Our Background
New York’s Hudson River is a precious resource. It provides drinking water for many communities, navigation for commercial shipping, recreational opportunities, and habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species.
More severe flooding, extreme storms, drought, and increasing development have converged to threaten the health of the river, creating new challenges for the Hudson’s communities. Continuous, real-time data about river conditions is essential to meet these challenges—whether they result from long-term change or short-term events like severe storms.
Formed in 2008, the HRECOS network provides the information we need to understand, manage, and protect the Hudson River for future generations. The data we collect are used to address local and regional natural resource issues, protect public health and safety,, and address research questions in and along the Hudson River.
